Applying Icon (.ico) files in Windows XP

Journal Entry: Fri May 5, 2006, 5:58 PM
Icon file format (.ico)

1. Download the icons (if already downloaded skip to 2).

2. Once downloaded extract the icons (if compressed in a zip/rar file otherwise go on to 3) using a decompression utility such as Winzip or Winrar. Extract the icons to a directory such as "c:\windows\icons" or any directory you wish.

3. Next, locate the folder or shortcut who's icon you wish to change. Right click on this folder/shortcut and select "Properties" in the menu that appears.

4. Wait for the Properties dialog window to open. Depending on whether you are changing a folder or shortcut icon follow the correct instructions below:

[folder image] a. Changing folder icon:

5a. In the Properties dialog window select the "Customize" tab at the top. When this tab opens click "Change Icon...".

6a. A new dialog window will appear. Click "Browse" at the top and navigate to where you extracted the icons.

7a. Select the icon you wish to use and select "OK". This will return you to the Properties dialog window here click "OK" again.

8a. You will be returned to My Computer/Windows Explorer/Desktop you started from with a shiney new icon instead of your old boring folder icon.

[shortcut image] b. Changing shortcut icon:

5b. In the Properties dialog window ensure the "Shortcut" tab at the top is selected. In this tab click "Change Icon...".

6b. A new dialog window will appear. Click "Browse" at the top and navigate to where you extracted the icons.

7b. Select the icon you wish to use and select "OK". This will return you to the Properties dialog window here click "OK" again.

8b. You will be returned to My Computer/Windows Explorer/Desktop you started from with a shiney new icon instead of your old boring shortcut icon.

is there a way to create my own .dll file with my own personal icons inside. sorta like an updated Windows SHELL32.dll ?
Im running WindowsXP and noticed that all the icons are in the SHELL32.dll, and wanted to make my own icon.dll file?

and how come you don't or have't made your own folder icon to extract all each of your folder icons into .. vista folder icons.ico etc etc

The instructions should be under "Changing Tricky Icons" > "From the desktop", in this [link] news item I did up a while ago.

I knew that already, but there is no My Pictures & My Music, etc.
Only 'My Document', 'My Computer', 'My Network' & 'Recycle Bin (empty/full)'.

There is something strange with your icons preview size (in IrfanView in my case). They display in 48x48 - when applied to any MS Windows element (shorcut, folder, app) they display in proper size. I suggest you mentions that system peculiarity as I deleted the icons just after downloading them - thinking they were in reduced quality :frustrated:. Only then I checked whether they apply properly - they did . Thanks

None of my icons have passwords on them. Are you referring to someone else's?

Ah - found the answer to my own question:

1. Go to the Control Panel.
2. Choose Appearance and Themes.
3. Double click on Display (this will bring up the Display Properties window).
4. Click on the Desktop tab.
5. Click on Customize Desktop (this will bring up the Desktop Items window).
6. Select the icon you want to change, click Change Icon.
7. Browse to the icon you've downloaded.
8. Click OK, and you are done.
9. Repeat steps 6 to 8 for each icon you want to change.

Note that in windows vista, you can name any graphics file "folder" (folder.jpg, folder.png, folder.gif, folder.bmp, folder.ico) and windows will use that file for the "contents" in a cute folder icon.

Is that only in thumbnail mode (like in XP?)

Also these are instructions are for XP not Vista.
I'll do up some Vista instructions when it gets officially released to the public.
